Why Clean?
Cleaning stainless steel can be crucial, either before or after pickling, depending on the case. It’s important to understand that the term “stainless steel” doesn’t mean no preparation or follow-up is needed.
Even chrome-nickel stainless steels with their protective passive layer are not permanently resistant to external influences and weathering. If the surface is repeatedly attacked and not maintained, the chromium oxide layer can be damaged. This often starts as “brown spots” and eventually leads to deeper corrosion known as “pitting.”
To prevent this or to correct damage, Pelox offers a broad range of cleaning products that help remove contamination, protect the passive layer, and restore the stainless steel to its original corrosion-resistant state.
Why Maintain?
Maintaining stainless steel is an often overlooked, yet essential aspect. The term “stainless” doesn’t automatically mean no follow-up treatment or maintenance is needed.
Chrome-nickel stainless steels, with their protective passive layer, are not permanently resistant to external influences and weather conditions—especially if they are continuously exposed to stress and not maintained.
This can lead to damage of the chromium oxide layer, first visible as “brown spots or stains,” which can later penetrate deeper into the material, a form of corrosion known as “pitting.”
To prevent this, Pelox offers a wide range of care products that help preserve the passive layer and restore the stainless steel to its original condition.
